Make your own AI for students to learn and explore.

Updated over a week ago

After you understand what Spaces are, you can begin to create your own. The Space creator is your toolkit to create engaging, interactive Spaces where your students can learn and explore within the guidelines you set.

To create a Space:

Because creating Spaces is one of the best tools on SchoolAI, there are a few ways to get there:

  • From your Launchpad (your homepage), choose Create a Space

  • From the navigation bar at the top of your screen, choose Spaces > Create. You’ll be shown all your previously created Spaces here. Choose the Create button again to build a new Space

Space creator: setting up a Space

Where you build your Space is called the Space creator. This is where you instruct the AI on how to interact, set learning standards, generate a cover image, and choose how your Space is presented to students:

Title

Your title will be viewable by students and should provide an overview of the topic.

AI prompt

This is where the magic happens. Type out what you want the AI to do or say, and how it should respond to your students. This is similar to giving instructions: the clearer and more specific your instructions, the better the AI will follow them. Don’t be overly concerned about formatting or keeping it short here. More instruction typically leads to a better experience. Learn more about the four-step guide to creating a strong prompt here or get more specific with an introduction to prompting here.

Standards

You can select a Common Core learning standard to adhere to by searching through the dropdowns that appear when you choose this field. Even if you don’t have a learning standard to match, choosing one helps the AI understand its audience. The tone of language, difficulty, and engagement adjusts to match any age or learning level.

Later, you can further personalize the learning levels by adjusting as students use the Space. Learn more about how Spaces work for every standard here.

You can also attach a document here to help the Space further support the learning standard you need. This is a great option to include lesson plans, worksheets, reading materials, visual aids, or assessment rubrics.

Cover image

You can upload your own, or make an AI-generated image. If you want an AI-generated cover image, you’ll need to fill out the title first, at a minimum. The title of the Space informs the image generation, so if you’re looking for something more specific, change the title to change the image. Learn more about creating AI-generated images on SchoolAI here.

Subtitle

The subtitle helps further define the Space. Students can see it, so you can use it to set expectations, give more of a preview, or dive into the details.

Teacher description

The teacher description can be seen by you and other teachers/administrators on SchoolAI. This can be helpful to differentiate if you teach the same subject to multiple grades, or need to tailor a Space for each of your classes.

Student description

This is what students see. Use it to provide instruction or a goal. Giving simple instructions to your students such as “Send a message and the AI will guide you” can be helpful for students who may not have understood verbal instructions.

Preview

As you build your Space, previewing how it works is crucial. After you set the AI prompt and other details, using the preview will show you how the Space works and responds. As you interact on the preview, you can adjust your prompt to better train and instruct the AI. Make sure you hit the refresh button at the top-right of your preview area after you adjust any details and want to preview again.

You can’t edit the Space after it’s already been launched and students are interacting, so it’s important to cover the details while you’re setting up the Space. If you need to edit the Space after launching it, you can pause the active Space and edit the Space prompt through the three dot options menu.

Pro tip: The AI prompt and preview are the most important parts of creating a Space. Put as much detail into your AI prompt as possible, and make sure you test how everything works using the preview.

Save the Space

When you’re done creating the Space, you have two options:

  • Save: If you’re saving this Space for another time, choose Save. Your saved Spaces are automatically added to your My creations folder, found on your Launchpad. You can edit and launch later

  • Save & Launch: If you’re ready to go and use the Space with students, choose Save & Launch. Options to share the Space with students pop up immediately, allowing your classroom to get to work and start interacting right away

Occasionally, we may notify you that your Space was not approved for public access. This can happen for a few reasons, but most often because the Space doesn’t have enough detail. As you add to the backend of the Space and save, it will automatically become ready for public access.

Share the Space with students

Your Space must be launched before any students can join; saved Spaces must be launched before any student interaction can happen.

After your Space is launched, a pop up will prompt you to share the Space with your class. You can do this through a Space code (QR code and link) or by adding it to your Google Classroom, if it has been integrated already.

Pro tip: Sharing a Space between teachers and students is different! We prevent students from accessing the same links as teachers.

Monitor students using Mission Control

As your classroom uses the Space, you can monitor each student individually and as a group to get real-time insights into student engagement, sentiment, and learning outcomes.

To use Mission Control to monitor students:

  1. Go to Spaces > Sessions and select the Space you want to monitor

  2. Interact with the dashboard to get updates on students as a group or individually

Learn more about using the Mission Control dashboard to monitor student activity here.

End a Space

Students can interact in a Space until you manually end the session. Closing the browser or leaving SchoolAI’s website will not end a Space.

To end a Space:

  1. Go to Spaces > Sessions and hover over the Space you want to end

  2. Choose the … options menu and select End
