Getting started with Spaces

Spaces are AI experiences, outlined by teachers, that provide tailored feedback and challenges based on students' interactions.

Updated over a week ago

SchoolAI’s main AI chat tool that students interact with are Spaces. Spaces act like chatbots, tutors, or text-based games, allowing students to explore topics in a dynamic way.

How it works

  1. Set up: Create a Space or choose (and edit) one that’s already been created. The Space creator is where you write the prompts that guide the AI with how to respond to and engage with your students. The clearer and more specific your instructions, the better the AI will follow them. You can even create a space that follows specific Common Core standards. You can preview how the AI responds to your prompt before you give your students access, allowing you to refine and improve the Space to ensure everything works as you intend.

  2. Share: When you’re ready, you’ll share the Space so your students can interact on their own devices. Students access the Space through a link or code that is shared through your preferred communication method, such as email, your school's learning management system (like Google Classroom), or directly in class. They can scan a QR code or use a link and password to jump in and start engaging with your Space.

  3. Interact: Students engage with the Space, which typically involves text-based interactions. These can include role-playing scenarios, quizzes, or guided discussions with historical figures or fictional characters.

Features are designed with universal accessibility standards in mind, including options to change the language or use voice recording responses.

  4. Monitor: You monitor student activity through sessions, receiving real-time insights into student engagement, sentiment, and learning outcomes. As you monitor the Mission Control dashboard, you’ll see both a big picture and the details of how things are going, with options to make changes to adjust the AI in real time.

As students interact, you’ll be given sentiment overviews, insight summaries, and learning outcome reviews to see if the material is clicking. You’ll be notified if students begin to use the AI inappropriately, or even if they say they’re feeling sad. The dashboard automatically groups students based on their interaction patterns and learning needs, enabling personalized instruction.

  5. Adapt: Based on the insights gathered, you can tailor instructions using prompts to better meet students' needs as they go. Or you can adjust the Space for future use.

With Spaces, you’re always in control. You can make the Space as open or as rule-bound (like a game) as you’d like. We even set up a few different types of Spaces for you to explore:

  • Pulse: Bellringer or Pulse: Exit Ticket allows you to start or end class with an activity in a Space you create

  • Historic Figure chatbot allows students to ask questions to the person of your choice

  • Topic Explorer allows students to freely ask questions about the topic of your choice, at their own level

  • Sidekick is a student’s very own generalized AI assistant, where they can take advantage of AI’s powerful capabilities to explore various topics, answer questions, quiz themselves, and more

Pro tip: If you feel overwhelmed, or can’t get a sense of how it works, go to the Discover library and choose a random Space (you can use Chat with Abraham Lincoln as an example). Select Start preview and begin to interact with the Space, typing answers to the questions as if you were a student. As you begin to understand how it works from the student perspective, you can explore more Spaces or create your own.
