What's New in Mission Control: Next Steps for Smart Groups

Smart Groups just got smarter

[Coming Soon]

Mission Control’s Class Mastery, Session Insights, Student Insights, and Smart Groups can already tell you which students are struggling, which are on track, and which are ready to move on. Now those insights can become action: a follow-up activity ready to hand to the groups that need it.

Smart Groups lets you group students by overall mastery, a single outcome, sentiment, or session insights, so you can quickly get to the students who need attention.

Next Steps generates an AI-suggested follow-up activity based on that group's mastery and lets you easily create a worksheet or a Space pre-configured for that group’s grade, subject, and needed learning focus in just a couple clicks.

Note: Smart Groups and Next Steps are available on Pro Trial, Pro, and Scale plans. Spaces and Smart Groups with low engagement may not have enough chats or signal to generate a meaningful Next Step suggestion.

Choosing a Smart Group preset

From any Space session's Mission Control dashboard, click "Smart Groups" and then the "Group by" dropdown list to choose how you'd like to group your students.

You'll find the following presets:

Preset

Groups students by...

Overall Mastery

Performance across all outcomes in the Space (Beginning, Growing, Proficient, Excelling)

Individual Outcome (new)

Performance on one specific learning outcome — useful when one target needs a closer look

Sentiment (new)

An AI-generated snapshot of each student's experience in the Space, based on their Headlines

Session insights (new)

AI-generated insights, grouping students by Support Needed, Misconceptions, Ready for More, Uncategorized, etc. (see below)

Overall Mastery

Students are grouped into tiers (Beginning, Growing, Proficient, and Excelling) based on their combined performance across all outcomes in the Space.

Individual Outcome

Rather than grouping by a student's overall mastery, this preset lets you select from your outlined Space session outcomes and isolate a single outcome mastery rating to see where every student stands. This is especially useful when the Class Insights flags an important outcome as a sticking point and you want to see who needs support and who's ready to move on.

Sentiment

This preset groups students by how they seem to be experiencing the Space (Negative, Neutral, or Positive) generated from their headlines throughout the session.

Session Insights

This sorts students into the same categories that power the Session insights panel on the upper right-hand corner of Mission Control:

  • Support Needed: Students who seem to be having a hard time with the concept the Space is teaching

  • Misconceptions: Groups students by the specific misconception their responses point to, so you can see what's tripping them up and who needs the correction

  • Ready for More: Students who've demonstrated mastery and are ready for more challenging material

  • Uncategorized: Students whose responses are too limited to categorize

Generating Next Steps for a group

Now every Smart Group includes Next Steps, so you can go from "here's who needs help," to "here's how to help them," and "here's something ready to hand them" — all from within Mission Control.

1. Generate a Next Step suggestion

Generate Next Steps suggestions for your Smart Groups by clicking the `Generate Next Step` button. You’ll get customized ideas for Worksheets or Spaces that will help your students progress. Don’t like the Next Step ideas you’re given? Simply click `Update` to get new ones.

Next Steps suggestions and resources are generated for the specific students in that group, so a Worksheet or Space created for your "Beginning" group will look different from one created for your "Ready for More" group, even within the same session.

2. Create the resource from Next Step suggestions

Click a Next Step suggestion to create the resource in just a few steps.

Once created, the resource will appear in the group's Next Steps area, next to “Created” with a link to open it directly, so you can assign or share it with that group right away. From here you can also Edit the resource if it needs additional changes.

3. Created Resources from Next Steps

Once a resource is created from a Next Step suggestion, it will show next to Created.

Any resource you create from a Smart Group is saved for you — you won't lose it if you don't use it right away. You'll find it in two places:

  1. Under that Smart Group's "Created" section in Mission Control

  2. In Organize, under All Resources, alongside everything else you've made.

After the Worksheet or Space is created, you’ll also be able to view the session’s Mission Control and the students that the resource was created for at the top of the Worksheet or the Space
