SchoolAI's Free plan is changing. This article walks you through what's new, what stays the same, and how the updated Free trial plan is designed to work for individual teachers.

Why we're making this change
As SchoolAI grows, we want our Free trial plan to offer real, lasting value to individual teachers — with no expiration date and no countdown clock. At the same time, our top priority across every plan, Free trial included, is protecting student safety and privacy. The changes below are built around that principle: safety and wellness features stay available to everyone, while some deeper analytics, customization, and premium tools become part of our paid plans.
The biggest change: Space Sessions
Free trial accounts now include 5 Space sessions per year.
A "session" is counted each time you run a Space — so if you create one Space and run it five separate times, you'll have used your full annual allotment. This is a session cap, not a cap on how many Spaces you can create.
A few things to know:
Your onboarding Space doesn't count. New users can go through their first Space without it affecting their annual limit.
[COMING SOON] You can earn more sessions through referrals. Each activated referral (a real, verified signup) earns you 2 additional Space sessions. There's no limit to how many sessions you can earn this way.
Several other features — like Live Translation, in-session Mission Control insights, Space-level Standards, and Space Attachments— are tied to this same session limit, since they only apply while a Space is running. You can find details on each below.
Chat with Dot
Chat with Dot remains available on the Free trial plan for teachers, with uncapped conversations and generations for users of all plans.
Live Translation
Live Translation (approximately 100 languages) is still part of the Free trial plan. It's available inside any Space you launch, so it falls within your 5 Space sessions per year.
Browser Extension
The Browser Extension offers a core feature set on the Free trial plan, including Chat with Dot, Document Creation, Revision History, and the ability to create a Space. Additional tools like writing feedback features, presentation creation, and the AI Notetaker are available on paid plans. See schoolai.com/pricing for the full breakdown.
Mission Control
Mission Control is partially available to free trial users rather than fully removed, so teachers can still stay connected to what's happening in their classrooms.
In-session insights (including Premium Insights, Smart Groups, and Outcomes) are available for any Space you've launched, within your annual session limit.
Student Chat Observability, including individual chat drill-down, is included on Free trial with no restrictions.
LLM Audit Traces and Usage Reports are available on paid plans.
PowerUps
The large majority of PowerUps remain available on the Free trial, including the Document Generator, Resource Uploads, the Graphing Calculator (powered by Desmos), Doodle Board, Image Generator, Translate, and Brain Boosters.
A small number of PowerUps — the Presentation Creator, Flashcards, Mindmap, and Video Explorer — are reserved for paid plans.
Tools & Assistants
Tools and Assistants are fully included on the Free trial plan, with no restrictions.
Insights & Alerts
Critical Alerts remain active for every user, on every plan, with no exceptions. We don't gate safety and wellness alerts behind a paywall — this baseline protection is the same whether you're on Free trial, Pro, or Scale.
Paid plans add account-level safety-adjacent features on top of that baseline, such as the ability to add an admin or backup recipient to receive critical alert emails, and (on Scale) teacher visibility into student Sidekick chats.
Standards Alignment
National and state standards remain fully available on the Free trial with no restrictions. Configurable standards for Space-level outcomes are available within your Space session limit. Custom standards upload and mapping is a Scale feature.
Data, Privacy & Security
There are no privacy-related changes as part of this update. All data privacy and compliance certifications remain the same across every plan:

AI Guidance & Guardrails
Standard SchoolAI guardrails apply to every Free trial account. Custom, persistent guardrails are available on Pro. Space-level RAG is available on the Free trial (within your Space session limit, with a 10MB file upload limit) and on Pro (50mb upload limit). Chat Attachments are included on the Free trial with no restrictions, and Space Attachments are available within your Space session limit.
Can I purchase a paid plan as an individual teacher?
SchoolAI's paid plans (Pro and Scale) are only available through a school or district purchase — we don't offer a self-serve, individual paid plan for teachers.
This is an intentional choice. We believe AI in the classroom works best when it's implemented at the school or district level, where administrators can support adoption, ensure consistent safety and privacy standards, and give teachers the training and resources to use it well.
