Getting Started with Book Explorer

Ignite literary engagement

The Book Explorer Space is designed to transform passive reading into an engaging, AI-assisted dialogue with literary history. Go beyond standard comprehension worksheets and invite students to step right into the world they’re studying.

Why Use Book Explorer?

Book Explorer serves as a personalized literary coach for each student. It helps you:

  • Deepen Literary Analysis: Guide students to analyze themes, character motivations, and symbolism through back-and-forth conversation.

  • Support Differentiation: The AI automatically adjusts its tone and complexity based on the specific grade level and learning needs you define.

  • Boost Engagement: Move beyond the "Right/Wrong" answer dynamic by using roleplay and creative brainstorming prompts.

How to Set Up Your Book Explorer Space

Get your Book Explorer Space up and running in minutes. To customize the experience for your curriculum:

1. Identify the Text

In the “What book are we discussing?” field, enter the title of the book your class is reading – this gives the AI context to pull from plot, characters, and setting.

2. Define Your Class

Use the “Class Description” field to give the AI a glimpse into your classroom. Include details like:

  • Grade level (e.g., "7th Grade ELA")

  • Specific learning needs or language skills

  • General student interests

Example: "A group of 10th-grade honors students who are currently studying dystopian tropes."

3. Customize the Instructions

The Custom Instructions field is where you define the "personality" and goal of the Space. You can use this to:

  • Encourage Roleplay: "Imagine you are a character from the book. How would you respond to this scenario?"

  • Analyze Symbolism: "Focus the conversation on the author’s use of the color green in the first three chapters."

  • Predict Outcomes: "Challenge students to predict what would happen if the story took place in modern-day society."

Ideas from the Classroom

Educators are using Book Explorer across various subjects to bring texts to life:

Best Practices for Success

  • Be Specific with Prompts: The more targeted your custom instructions, the more insightful the AI's questions will be.

  • Connect to Objectives: Align your prompts with your specific weekly learning goals (e.g., focusing on "foreshadowing" or "unreliable narrators").

  • Review Student Sessions: Use the saved student transcripts to identify misconceptions in reading comprehension or to highlight brilliant student insights during your next class discussion.
