Sparking Literary Conversations with Book Explorer

Transform literary discussions with Book Explorer

Updated over 2 weeks ago

The Book Explorer Space allows you to transform traditional book discussions into interactive, teacher-driven, AI-powered experiences. Students can dive deeper into themes, analyze complex characters, and connect ideas in a dynamic digital format.

Why Use Book Explorer?

Book Explorer is designed to move beyond basic comprehension by encouraging active participation:

  • Deeper Analysis: Encourage critical thinking and comprehension as students engage with AI to analyze symbolism, themes, and author intent.

  • Personalized Differentiation: Custom instructions allow you to adjust the complexity and tone based on individual student reading levels or language skills.

  • High Engagement: Creative roleplay and thought-provoking prompts turn students into active participants in the literary world.

How to Set Up and Customize Your Space

Follow these four steps to launch a tailored literary exploration for your class:

  1. Select Your Book: In the "What book are we discussing?" field, enter the title of the book your class is currently reading.

  2. Add Custom Instructions: Use this field to guide the AI’s persona and goals. You can prompt the AI to:

    • Roleplay: "Imagine you are a character from the book. How would you respond to this scenario?"

    • Analyze: "Focus on the author’s use of symbolism in this specific chapter."

    • Connect: "Predict how the story would change if it took place in modern-day society."

  3. Define Your Class Description: Provide details about your students' grade level, interests, and specific learning needs. This ensures the AI provides responses at the appropriate Lexile level and complexity.

  4. Preview and Launch: Use the Start Preview button to test the experience before students join. Once satisfied, click Save & Launch to generate an invite link or QR code for your students.

Classroom Examples

Educators use Book Explorer across various subjects to meet different learning objectives:

  • Middle School ELA: Roleplay characters from The Giver to explore different societal perspectives.

  • High School English: Analyze the "fire" symbolism in Fahrenheit 451.

  • Social Studies: Connect the themes of Animal Farm to specific historical revolutions.

  • Creative Writing: Brainstorm and generate alternate endings for popular novels like The Hunger Games.

Monitoring Student Progress

While students are interacting in the space, you can use Mission Control to monitor conversations in real-time. This dashboard provides insights into student engagement and flags individuals who may need additional support.
